A little church with deep roots and an open door

Out here in Berkeley County, folks have been gathering at New Hope since 1837 to worship, to sing, to bury and to baptize, and to look after one another. We are not a big church. We would just be glad to see you Sunday.

A word of welcome

You are welcome at New Hope

If you are reading this and wondering whether you would fit in here, save yourself the worry. You would. There are folks at New Hope whose people have been here five generations, and folks who came for the first time last month. Both are welcome, and honestly you cannot tell them apart by Sunday dinner.

We are a small congregation in a country community. We sing the old hymns. The children are not quiet and we would not want them to be. If you are hurting, somebody here will pray with you. If you are hungry, somebody here will feed you.

Come see us. Call ahead if you would rather, and somebody will meet you at the door.

Coming for the first time

What Sunday morning looks like, where to park, and what to do with your hands when everybody else knows the hymn. No surprises.

How we got here

1837 to today. Slavery and freedom, a church bought and rebuilt by its own members, a fire, and a congregation that kept showing up anyway.

Life at New Hope

Sunday morning

Sunday School for every age at 9:45. Worship at 11:00, with the old hymns, the scripture, and the preaching. We are usually out a little after noon, give or take how the Spirit moves.

Some folks dress up. Some come in from work in jeans. Nobody is counting.

Around the table

First Sunday of the month, the whole church stays for dinner right after worship. Bring a dish if you can. If you cannot, come anyway, because there has never once been a shortage.

And when a month carries a fifth Sunday, the old All Day Meeting brings preachers from all around and we are here till the afternoon.
